A VIDEO "THE SUBMARINERS" (3 PARTS), 1967
FILMED ABOARD THE USS SHARK, SSN 591
|

Due to some incidental efforts of Bob
Keller via Homer Darrell Callicutt {Shark 1976-1978) on my
Facebook Page I was able to locate, download and provide this video (in
three parts) of "The Submariners."
Since many of you have asked, and many of
you already know, "What's it like aboard a submarine?" I thought the
video was appropriate.
I left the Shark late 1963, but many
of the scenes ashore and aboard remain familiar to me and it speaks of
certain authenticity. The five individuals named, however, do not exist
on my list of over 600 Sharkmates. The CO (Commanding Officer) named as
LCDR (Lieutenant Commander) Steven Ferris seems likewise inaccurate as my information
shows that CDR (Commander) David Self (now deceased) relieved CDR John
Donlon (still active on Email) in 1967. Owing to the sensitivity of
those years it is certainly understandable that actual names were not used.
Also omitted are any references to the
engineering spaces (where the nuclear reactor, propulsion turbines and
electrical equipment were located). This is consistent with my own
experiences as with the media. Early in 1963 a photo group from "Paris
Match" (in 1963 a magazine similar to our own "Life" magazine) and were
likewise not allowed any access to the engineering spaces. The majority
of that article has been translated from French into English and remains
posted as Paris
Match - Shark -1963.
Regardless of your own curiosities of
experiences, I hope you enjoy. Each Part runs approximately 9 minutes; a
free 'RealPlayer' may be downloaded at
REAL PLAYER.
